Ancient Wood Chips Found 160 Feet Underground at the New Eureka Community Park

Eureka, Montana: Post Well Drilling discovered ancient, charcoaled wood chips during the drilling of the new Eureka community park water well. The wood was flushed up from a section of liquid sand between the depths of 150 to160 feet. Montana state geohydrologists, James Madison, collected samples of the wood and returned to Billings, Montana to have them carbon dated. This discovery surprised a driller with over 30-years of experience.

“Over the years, I’ve seen a lot of things come from deep under the ground,” says John Post, Owner and Driller at Post Pump and Drilling. “I was surprised to see such large pieces of wood that far down.”

This news comes in the wake of many recent initiatives and accomplishments by boy scout Blake Lancaster, whose Eagle Scout project evolved into something much larger. He shares the inspiration for his project stating, “I think that people in [the Eureka] community need access to more healthy activities, especially in the wintertime.” The project initially started out with a vision of building a community ice rink but quickly expanded to building a large park including:

  • B-Ball, Volleyball, and Tennis Courts
  • Multiple sized soccer fields
  • Public playground
  • Running and biking trail

Local residents and businesses have donated tens of thousands of dollars in support of building the park. “The outpouring of support has been inspiring,” said Gretchen Lancaster, the mother of Blake. “We couldn’t do it without the support of people and businesses like John at Post Pump and Drilling.”
